Ironwood Public Safety

Public Safety

Mission Statement
The members of the Ironwood Public Safety Department are sworn and dedicated to uphold the constitutional guarantees to ensure the rights of its citizens; that people can enjoy a peaceful and safe existence aiding individuals who are in danger of physical harm, from criminal attack, or disaster; to identify and interact with the community and generate mutual understanding, public trust and support; to uphold their oath and the universal code of ethics to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of our profession through a value system of honesty and integrity, accountability, and due diligence as public servants; contribute to the goals of the city; create a safe environment, partnering with community development where people can feel confident that Ironwood is a good place to work and live.

Public Safety Concept
In 1980, the City of Ironwood combined the Police Department and the Fire Department and the new “Public Safety Department” was formed. All officers were cross-trained as police officers and firefighters. All officers are sworn police officers by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and are also fully trained to the fire fighter II level. This concept has allowed the department to become more efficient, more cost effective, and more productive.
